Meet the Trustees

The Institute of Fundraising is a membership organisation and a company limited by guarantee

The Trustees are elected by members of the Institute of Fundraising and meet six times a year. The elections take place annually with the call being made to all members to consider standing. Nominations must be backed by two members and nominees are required to provide a 100-word synopsis of what they have to offer.

Trustees stand for three years and can be re-elected for a further three-year term. The Trustees also have the power to co-opt additional members onto the Board for their specific skills.

Paul AmadiPaul Amadi, Chair

Paul Amadi has been a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising since July 2006 and Chair since 2008.

Paul has recently become Director of Fundraising at the NSPCC, where he is responsible for an income target of over £140m generated by over 400 fundraisers.

Prior to this Paul was Group Director of Fundraising at Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) and was responsible for managing a team of 500 fundraisers who generated the voluntary income RNIB required to develop its work. Paul has a long-standing interest in disability issues. Before joining RNIB in June 2006, he was Director of Fundraising at Sense for over four years and before that, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at Leonard Cheshire, another national disability charity. This came after starting his fundraising career with National Childrens Homes.

Paul obtained his first degree in politics at Nottingham University and his Masters at LSE.

Alan GosschalkAlan Gosschalk, Vice-Chair

Alan Gosschalk has been a trustee and the Vice-Chair since July 2005.

Alan's career started in brand management, but he soon decided that the voluntary sector gave him greater opportunity to 'make a difference'. He initially joined Help the Aged in a Marketing role, moved to The Imperial Cancer Research Fund as Head of Marketing (where he won 'Charity Direct Marketeer of the Year'), and then became Fundraising Director at The Royal National Institute for Deaf People. Alan joined Shelter as Director of Fundraising in February 2000, during his time Shelter's voluntary income more than doubled.Alan was then Fundraising Director at AMREF from 2008 until December 2009. Alan is now working at Blue Frog.

Alan is Chair of the ImpACT coalition, which aims to galvanise the voluntary sector to be more transparent and accountable and to do more to educate the public, supporters and media about the realities of modern-day charities. He is also a trustee of the overseas charity, 'Hope & Homes for Children'.

Kevin GeesonKevin Geeson, Honorary Treasurer

Kevin Geeson was appointed as a Trustee in July 2007.

He is currently working at the NHS Confederation as Deputy chief Executive, Kevin has worked for such diverse organisations as the RNIB, Metropolitan Police and London Borough of Newham.

Kevin is an experienced and energetic senior executive and a forward thinking leader with a track record of achieving change. His previous experience will give him good stead as Honorary Treasurer for the Institute.

Mark AstaritaMark Astarita, Trustee

Mark Astarita has been a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising since February 2008.

He joined the British Red Cross in 2003 moving from The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) where he held the position of Deputy Chief Executive. Mark has over 17 years experience of fundraising in the voluntary sector joining the NDCS from the small charity, Prisoners Abroad, his first fundraising job.

From 1994, Mark was responsible for directing all the NDCS Fundraising, Public Relations, Membership and International activities.

Back when he started with NDCS the charity's fundraised income stood at around £1m per annum; during Mark's time voluntary income rose more than ten-fold.

Since joining the Red Cross Mark has driven through the new fundraising strategy 'Volunteering to Give', secured an additional £25m of fundraising and retail investment and seen non-emergency income go from £55m to over £100m pa.

John BaguleyJohn Baguley, Honorary Secretary

John Baguley has been a trustee of the Institute since July 2006, a member of the Convention Board .

He is Director of the International Fundraising Consultancy. The author of “Successful Fundraising” and a former Fundraising Director for the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, Amnesty International UK and Friends of the Earth.

He was the first Director of International Fundraising for Amnesty's International Secretariat and the first Director of the Soil Association.

He has extensive overseas experience, having worked and spoken at workshops and seminars in most parts of the world.

Gerry BeldonGerry Beldon, Trustee

Gerry has been a Trustee since 2008.

Gerry has worked in the not-for-profit sector for 28 years, with national organisations including Barnardo’s and Citizens Advice as well as regional and local organisations.

He has extensive experience in all areas of fundraising, with special interests in the challenges of revenue generation in the field of Social Welfare.

A Trustee of a local Citizens Advice Bureau, he also serves on the national Citizens Advice Governance Advisory Board. He currently serves as Chair of Northumbria Junior Chess Association, and is a member of the North East Social Capital Forum.

Gerry has been a consultant since 1997, specializing in revenue generation in the Social Welfare field. In 2006, with Carl Chapman, he set up 26-01, a Community Interest Company serving the not-for-profit sector.

Gerry brings to his new role as Trustee of the Institute a passion for the profession and a commitment to serving and supporting grassroots fundraisers across the UK.

Fiona DuncanFiona Duncan, Trustee

Fiona Duncan became a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in July 2008. Her role is to provide the link between the UK and Scottish Executive Committees.

Fiona’s involvement with the Institute goes back to the mid 90s when she joined the Scottish Training (now Professional Development) Committee. Fiona chaired the Institute of Fundraising’s Scottish Executive Committee from November 2003 until June 2006 and was awarded a Fellowship in January 2007.

Fiona has been in the voluntary sector for 16 years and since October 2006 has been a senior consultant with THINK Consulting Solutions. Prior to joining THINK, Fiona was Director of External Affairs at Capability Scotland for seven years and before that, Head of Development at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and WaterAid’s Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Charlotte Trinder, Trustee (NI)charlotte trinder

Charlotte Trinder became a Trustee of the Institute in July 2010.

Charlotte has been a fundraiser for 14 years and has worked for a variety of voluntary organisations both local and national including the NSPCC, NI Chest Heart and Stroke Association, Marie Curie, Cedar Foundation and Concern. Prior to joining the British Red Cross she was the fundraising manager for Arthritis Research UK in Northern Ireland. For the past four years she has been a community fundraiser for the British Red Cross in Northern Ireland.

She has been a member and involved with the Institute of Fundraising for the past 13 years. When she joined the NI Committee, she became Secretary and then held the position of Vice Chair and Events, organising the very successful Institute of Fundraising NI lunchtime seminars. The lunchtime seminars gave an opportunity for NI fundraisers to access quality training at reasonable rates. Charlotte then became Chair of the NI committee, standing down in 2008.

Clare Anderson, Trusteeclare anderson

Clare has worked in fundraising since graduating in 2000, both for Higher Education and in the Hospice sector. Currently, Clare is Head of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Plymouth. This role involves being the University's strategic lead on all things 'fundraising' and the implementation of a sustainable alumni programme. Plymouth's Development Office is a 'start up' operation and is a stark contrast from Clare's previous role as Deputy of Development at Durham University - her alma mater.

Having completed the Certificate in Fundraising Management Clare is committed to supporting and encouraging the development of new professionals in the sector and is particularly keen to work between HE and other fundraising professionals to maximise training and development opportunities.

Jasvir Kaur, Trusteejasvir kur
Jasvir is Director of Fundraising at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture (MF). Her wide-ranging experience covers events, trusts and foundations, major grants, major donors and legacies, with particular expertise in Direct Marketing and individual giving.

Jasvir started her career in the charity sector with Greenpeace UK before moving to the MF in 1997 where she has overseen the organisation's growth from a £1.5 million operation, to the £8 million multi-site national charity it is today. She was awarded the Charity Times Fundraising Manager of the Year in 2004 and is a trustee of MamaCash a Women's Rights organisation in the Netherlands.

Jasvir has a BSc (econ) in Business Administration from the University College of Wales - Aberystwyth and an MBA from Sheffield Hallam University.

Stephen PidgeonStephen Pidgeon, Trustee
Stephen Pidgeon is was elected as Trustee in July 2008.

Stephen’s been running direct marketing agencies close to the fundraising sector since the early eighties. He joined Chapter One, set up Direct Results in 1988 and the specialist Fundraising Unit at generalist agency Brann, in 1989. In agency terms he’s a ‘suit’ which means he’s been developing strategies and launching campaigns for charity clients throughout his marketing career.

His passion for fundraising led to the mighty step of setting up his own agency with two colleagues, Target Direct, in 1993 building it to a £33m turnover business by the end of 2007, employing 130 staff. But now it is part of a publicly quoted marketing company, and has a new name, Tangible Response, so he’s back doing what he’s always preferred doing, working with charity clients on fundraising challenges.

Stephen was a member of the Convention Committee for seven years and chaired it for three difficult years when money was short and the Convention was a key source of the Institute’s income. More recently, he chaired the working party and produced the draft Code on Practice on Direct Mail.

Stephen speaks on platforms throughout Europe and the Americas, and writes extensively in trade journals. He is a Fellow of the Institute.

Martin PriceMartin Price, Trustee

Dr Martin Price has been a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising since 2005.

He has been Director of Martin Price Associates since 1996, providing advice and training on fundraising and business management to charities, other voluntary bodies, community organisations and social enterprises, mainly in Wales.

He worked for The Prince’s Trust, The Office of HRH the Prince of Wales, Business in the Community and Mencap.

Prior to that, he was a senior manager at British Gas. He is Chair of the Board of a social firm and Vice Chair of Governors of a secondary school.

Martin is a member of the Finance and Resources Committee and chaired the Institute of Fundraising Cymru for eight years.

Gill Raikes, TrusteeGill Raikes

Gill Raikes became a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in February 2010.

Gill joined the National Trust in the 1980s as a junior press officer.Since then, she has managed the Charity's Neptune Campaign, introduced several national events and fundraising activities, such as a range of donnor programmes, and managed the new and growing regional fundraising team.Since 2001, Gill has been Director of Fundraising.Last year, she was awarded a Lifetime Contribution Award by the Charity Sector in 2008.

The Fundraising Department, with help and support from other colleagues, brings in £84m each year.

Tanya Steele, TrusteeTanya Steele

Tanya Steele became a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in July 2009.

Tanya joined Save the Children in 2004. As Director of Supporter Relations and Fundraising she is responsible for significantly growing both the organisation's income and levels of support to deliver dramatic change for children.

Prior to Save the Children, Tanya spent over 10 years in the technology sector working through a range of boom and bust cycles. During this time she held a number of senior business, marketing and communications roles at BT, Siemens and Avaya. Tanya has a BSc in marketing from Lancaster University.

Jo Swinhoe, TrusteeJo sWINHOE

Jo Swinhoe became a Trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in 2009.

A professional fundraiser for 15 years, Jo has been Director of Fundraising and Marketing with the Alzheimer's Society since 2005, having previously been with the NSPCC and charities local to her home in Sheffield.

Jo is a member of the Convention Board for the Institute of Fundraising. She presents on fundraising, organisational strategy and management regularly both in the UK and overseas. Jo has a science degree from Aberdeen University, a post graduate degree from Sheffield Hallam University and is currently continuing her own professional development with the Chartered Directors Qualification from the Institute of Directors.

Dawn Varley, Trusteedawn varley

Dawn became a trustee of the Institute of Fundraising in July 2010. Dawn has worked in the charitable/nfp sector for over 12 years, and is currently a Project Manager at Age UK. She has spent the majority of her career to date working with fundraising databases, and is a big believer in the single supporter view as a means of facilitating a relationship fundraising approach.

She was a Database Manager at WaterAid between 2001-2004, at at time of the charity doubling its fundraising income and winning 'Charity of the Year', and was lucky enough to be selected to visit projects in Malawi to see the impact of funds on the ground. She has also worked at Christian Aid as Data Development Manager, and as an Associate Consultant with Purple Vision.

Dawn has been involved with the Institute's Technology Special Interest Group since 2007, and is currently Vice Chair. She is also a trustee of Brook London, a sexual health charity.
