Best Practice Guide to Cross-Border Fundraising

Fundraising throughout the UK can be a complex issue, particulary where fundraising across nations, with sister organisations doing the same in other nations and working for the same beneficiary groups.

This guidance has been developed to aid those charities that fundraise across the UK's nations. It sets out key best practice issues to enable sister organisations to operate effectively within these complex boundaries.

Some of the fundamentals included in the guidance are:

  • Donors must know where their donations will be spent;
  • Charities must be sensitive to donor expectations of where their money will be spent;
  • Charities receiving donations from a donor residing outside their area of operation must make them aware of services offered by any sister organisations offering equivalent services there;
  • All parties should be involved in joint working from the earliest stages and throughout the process;
  • The Institute’s Code of Fundraising Practice on accountability and transparency must be followed;
  • Any agreements or protocols between sister organisations must be endorsed by all high level stakeholders, particularly CEOs and trustees;
  • Information and publicity materials must make clear the agreement between cross-border charities.
