The Codes of Fundraising Practice are written by the sector, for the sector. A robust system is in place to ensure that standards are introduced that work for the sector, including a range of stakeholders.
Stage 1: Choosing the Code
The Institute's Standards Committee determine which Code needs to be revised or developed, following recommendations made by various stakeholders such as members of the Institute.
Stage 2: Working Party
A working party is convened to write a draft Code. Membership of the working party is voluntary and and will be considered carefully to ensure sufficient depth and expertise in the area(s) of fundraising covered by the proposed Code.
Stage 3: Standards Committee
The Chair of the working party presents the draft Code to the Institute's Standards Committee, who have the authority to make amendments or ask for further work to be done.
Stage 4: Consultation
Once approved by the Standards Committe, all draft Codes undergo at least a 12 week consultation period. These consultations are open to the general public, in addition to targetting key stakeholders.
Key stakeholders include our individual and organisational members, Government departments including the Office of the Third Sector, the Charity Commission, Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, and umbrella bodies in the sector.
Consultation periods are advertised by e-mail, on this website and in the sector press. Full details are available in the Consultation Procedure briefing.
Stage 5: Sign-off and Publication
Following consultation, the Chair of the working party and the Standards Committee amend the draft Code, as appropriate. The final Code is then approved by the Institute's Trustees before being published online.
