Payment of Fundraisers

Principles to adhere to when paying fundraiser

The Payment of Fundraisers Code replaces the former Payment of Fundraisers on a Commission Basis Code and provides more comprehensive guidance for all those involved in paying fundraisers.

While a variety of payment mechanisms can be used, it is important to follow the guiding principles set out in the Code to help ensure the best system for the fundraiser, the fundraising organisation and, ultimately, the beneficiaries.

The Institute opposes commission, and specifically commission-only, payments in principle but it is recognised that in some circumstances this payment mechanism may be deemed favourable. Key criteria that need to be met before commission payments are used are highlighted in the Code.

While fundraising payments must not be excessive, the Code does not specify absolute payments. In many cases, this will vary on the role, the location and the size of the organisation, for example. Possible fundraising salaries are explored in a Fundraising Salaries briefing that used research from job adverts as an indication of the sorts of payments that could be expected.

Read the Code in full for details of best practice standards in paying fundraisers.
