In just three years the Auckland Castle Trust has secured £90m to restore the Castle and its vast walled garden; to build world-class museums and galleries, and implement wide-reaching and acclaimed community programme in a deprived community (spanning a spectacular night-time show starring 2,000 volunteers, through working with excluded school-children who became the Castle’s best tour guides).

Its own Chairman described the scheme as ‘utterly, searingly bonkers’ – but has been its principal financial backer as well as leader. Yet Auckland Castle has secured over £20m in grants from national funders, making it one of the most successful ever museum fundraising projects outside London. The ingredients? Listening to potential donors, a small but passionate team, and a compelling, if quixotic, message…

Who makes donations worth £1 million or more, and why? This talk explores the world of mega-philanthropy, sharing insights into the people who give - as well as those who ask for - the biggest charitable donations. Drawing on nearly a decade of research, this talk explains how many million pound donations are given by UK donors and to UK charities, what kinds of causes receive such support and what donors hope for in return.

Making the ask can be terrifying, so how do you cope with the fear and do it anyway? Drawing upon personal experience, the speakers will share what has worked for them, unpicking how to choose the right moment, the right amount and the right person to ask. With real life examples from a range of charities, including the NSPCC, The Royal Society and International Rescue Committee UK, this will be a practical, candid session that will help you enjoy asking successfully.

King’s College London continues to push boundaries following the successful close of the award winning ‘World questions| King’s answers’, which raised £600m to help tackle some of the world’s biggest questions.  In a competitive fundraising market, how do we shape a successful major gift fundraising programme? How do we embed fundraising in the organisational culture? These are questions all sectors struggle with.
