Driving Forward Best Practice

Ongoing work of the Institute's Policy team

The Policy Unit is responsible for developing the Codes of Fundraising Practice, which outline legal requirements and best practice in fundraising. The Codes of Fundraising Practice are the best practice standards for fundraising in the UK and are the standards against which the Fundraising Standards Board judges complaints.

Last year saw the finalisation of the Direct Mail Code and revision of the Face-to-Face Activity Code so that it incorporates prospecting as well as traditional fundraising.

For information about Codes undergoing development, see the Current Consultations page. All of the Codes are also undergoing a legal review to ensure they remain legally robust. This is an ongoing process and Codes will be updated online accordingly.

It is the role of the fundraising community to decide what the fundraising standards should be. It is also then the obligation of the sector to abide by those standards.

The role of the Institute of Fundraising is to ensure appropriate Codes of Fundraising Practice are developed. The Codes belong to the sector and are only as good as the fundraising community make them so it is vital that the sector engages in Code consultations.

The Institute of Fundraising has also been instrumental in founding, and continues to support and work closely with, other bodies that promote best practice in fundraising – The ImpACT Coalition; the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association and the Fundraising Standards Board.
