Distinctions between Lotteries
The rules applying to different types of lotteries
Are you running the draw as part of a fundraising event as this makes a difference?
There are three different types of lottery, a small lottery which is run as part of an event or entertainment; a private lottery where tickets are sold to people living or working in the same premises and a society lottery which is run by a society or organisation and must be registered with either the local authority or the Gaming Board for Great Britain.
What if I run a society lottery?
If you are running a society lottery the maximum price you can charge for a ticket is £2 but you can sell tickets to the general public.

If it is a small lottery there is no limit on the price of tickets but you must only sell them within the time and place of the entertainment.
More »What about a private lottery?
You can sell as many tickets as you like at whatever price you choose but only to people who live or work on the same premises or are members of an organisation whose primary purpose is not any form of betting or gaming.
More »Finally, competitions...
A competition involves a degree of skill, which is not statutorily defined, so you may wish to see legal advice. Competitions that depend on the successful prediction of a future event or of a past event where the outcome is not yet known are unlawful.
