What about a private lottery?

You can sell as many tickets as you like at whatever price you choose but only to people who live or work on the same premises or are members of an organisation whose primary purpose is not any form of betting or gaming.

Like a society lottery, there are rules on what must be printed on the tickets. You must only advertise the lottery on the tickets or the premises of the organisation or place of work or residence.

The law relating to lotteries is complex and these answers are not comprehensive.

If you are planning to run a raffle or lottery, read the Institute’s Code of Practice, Raffles and Lotteries (217kb) and the Gaming Board publication, Lotteries and the Law, available on the Gaming Board’s web site.

If you live in Northern Ireland, the Gaming Board does not have jurisdiction.

Section 4.4 of the Raffles and Lotteries Code has more information.
