Payment of Fundraisers

Factors to consider when setting pay

The Institute of Fundraising does not give advice about specific cases relating to payment of fundraisers.

Conditions of employment vary from organisation to organisation. Salaries depend on a variety of factors including the type of fundraising practised, for example, some fundraisers use a variety of techniques and plan for short, medium and long term income generation, whereas others are specialist by nature.

Other factors could include region, type of charity, method of payment and level of responsibility.

To gain a better understanding of appropriate salary levels, it is worth reviewing adverts for similar posts in the sector press. Visit our Recruiting a Fundraiser section and also take a look at the local papers.

You might also consider contacting a similar organisation to benchmark your needs against equivalent jobs. For part-time jobs, remember to compare salaries on a pro-rata basis.

Comparative information can be found in the Annual Voluntary Sector Salary Survey carried out by Remuneration Economics. Contact Jenny Saunders on 020 8288 6881.

The Institute of Fundraising’s Code of Fundraising Practice, Payment of Fundraisers on a Commission Basis (145kb) gives advice about method of payment for fundraisers.
