15 June 2012
Big hearted Brits dug deep over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a massive increase in charitable giving, according to the Institute of Fundraising – the charities’ champion.
According to new figures released by Give as you Live – donations to charities increased by a massive 40% in the run up and throughout the Royal celebrations.
Simon Morrison, Institute of Fundraising’s Director of Policy and Communications said: “It’s clear the feel good factor generated by the Jubilee has paid dividends to many good causes and charities.
“Not only did the Jubilee show that Brits are a pretty patriotic bunch, they are also big hearted too.
“Earlier this year we surveyed donors right across the UK and found that despite current economic hardships, people are continuing to give generously.” **
Give as you Live’s statistics showed that in a 21 day period before 20 May £250,168 was spent generating donations to good causes through the charity shopping site.
However in with the same day period before 10 June over £360, 000 was spent generating donations to charity – meaning a whopping 40% increase.
Polly Gowers - CEO and Founder of Everyclick which runs Give as you Live said: “It’s great to see our shoppers growing so fast – each purchase means a charity has benefited. There are millions of pounds that can be raised through online shopping - we will not rest until many more people know about it.”
** Our recent research with CFG and PWC, ‘Managing in a Downturn’, showed that 93% of fundraisers found it more difficult to fundraise last year with the loss of income due to statutory cuts and the continuing recession.
