New Conference Examines Global Impact and Implications of Major Donors

The first-ever joint conference between the Association of Fundraising Professionals (‘AFP’) and Institute of Fundraising (‘Institute’) will explore the increasing importance of major donors around the world and how charities can tap into these donors’ vision and support.

Attracting an international audience of speakers and delegates from North America, Europe and Asia, the senior-level conference will take place at Hotel Russell in London on Thursday 6 – Friday 7 November 2008.

Fundraising has become an increasingly global phenomenon, and major donors are at the heart of this trend, with the resources to empower significant change in countries around the world. While fundraising differs in some respects from country to country, many of its core values and principles exist around the world.

'First the profession found that the ethical principles involved in fundraising were shared by charities around the world, so we developed the International Statement of Ethical Principles in Fundraising, a universal set of ethical standards,' said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP.

'Now we’re finding that donor concerns and values are strikingly similar no matter what country they’re from. There’s a lot that fundraisers can learn from other countries, and this great conference is a critical first step in that process.'

Paul Schervish, director, Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College (USA), will explore the ‘new physics’ of philanthropy, outlining the fundamental meaning of philanthropy as ‘care and friendship’. In addition, Alexander Hoare, chief executive of C. Hoare & Co. will give an insight into a major donor’s mindset in a session focusing on a new generation of ‘hands-on philanthropists’ and ‘strategic donors’.

Other high level speakers at the conference intended for senior-level fundraisers, board and trustee-level delegates include:

  • Ellen Sullivan, director of corporate and foundation relations, Harvard University (USA), who will speak on managing donor expectations and recruiting and developing successful major donor fundraisers
  • Marianne ‘Mayan’ G. Quebral, executive director, Venture for Fund Raising (Philippines), who will explore ‘The Impact of Culture on Major Donor Fundraising’
  • Caroline Underwood, director of philanthropy and partnerships, Save the Children (UK)
  • Barbara de Colombe, director major donors, HEC Foundation, HEC School of Management (France).

'This new partnership event between the Institute and AFP is hugely exciting and the first of its kind,' said Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive at the Institute of Fundraising.

'Major donors play a critical role in fundraising and philanthropy, and the conference will offer unrivalled networking opportunities, inspiration, lateral thinking and best-practice sharing that crosses cultures, sectors and economies.

'The better charities can understand and work with major donors, the more impact major donors will have in their giving.'
