The Institute of Fundraising is welcoming the new legislation to regulate charities and fundraising in Northern Ireland, which received Royal Assent on 9th September 2008 and is now publicly available following a Northern Ireland plenary session.
The legislation passed on 9th September 2008:
- Provides a definition of ‘charity’ and ‘charitable purpose’;
- Establishes the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland and the Charity Tribunal for Northern Ireland;
- Creates a register for charities;
- Provides a new form of charitable body, a charitable incorporated organisation;
- Deals with the regulation of charities, their assets and public charitable collections.
Megan Pacey, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Institute of Fundraising, comments:
'We welcome this new legislation in Northern Ireland. It represents a major change - not just for charities operating in Northern Ireland, but also those who interact, support or administer them.'
The Institute of Fundraising is helping to take forward the implementation of the legislation by working with the Northern Ireland Government’s Department for Social Development.
