Institute Spearheads European Wide Response to EU Threat

The Institute of Fundraising is to initiate a response from across the whole of Europe, to counter the threat of the proposed revision of the European Union’s Data Protection Directive which could mean tighter controls around fundraising.

Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive of the Institute of Fundraising, and President of the European Fundraising Association, comments:

'The Institute of Fundraising, along with its European colleagues, has invested a great deal of time and energy in developing partnerships to be able to counter just such a response from the EU.

'As president of the European Fundraising Association, I have the backing of 18 member countries and a further five observer status countries to create a powerful and strong voice.'

'Our Director of Policy and Campaigns, Louise Richards has many years of international collaboration experience and will lead our work in this area.'

Joining Louise Richards in spearheading a Europe-wide response to the EU’s data protection consultation will be representatives from EFA member organisations in both Denmark and the Netherlands.

Louise Richards, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Institute, adds:

'We will ensure that in the course of this campaign, we’ll speak on behalf of our members. We’ll also seek collaboration with the Direct Marketing Association, to ensure a co-ordinated response.

'It’s vital we make a strong enough case to ensure that charities are excluded from this proposed revision – this development has the potential to affect all areas of fundraising, not just telephone fundraising.'
