An Institute of Fundraising document outlining best practice in cross-border fundraising is launched today. This represents the culmination of work undertaken by the Institute’s membership in both England and Scotland.
The best practice guidance highlights fundamentals in cross-border fundraising, including outlining that:
- Donors must know where their donations will be spent;
- Charities must be sensitive to donor expectations of where their money will be spent;
- Charities receiving donations from a donor residing outside their area of operation must make them aware of services offered by any sister organisations offering equivalent services there;
- All parties should be involved in joint working from the earliest stages and throughout the process;
- The Institute’s Code of Fundraising Practice on accountability and transparency must be followed;
- Any agreements or protocols between sister organisations must be endorsed by all high level stakeholders, particularly CEOs and trustees;
- Information and publicity materials must make clear the agreement between cross-border charities.
There is also specific guidance on trusts, foundations and statutory funding, individual giving, corporate and event fundraising and use of the media.
Megan Pacey, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Institute of Fundraising, comments:
'This guide outlines clear best practice in this area and our aim now is to promote and support its use amongst all fundraising organisations working in it.
'The Institute has been happy to support this piece of work and it is another great example of how members can help shape best practice in fundraising and support the profession’s relationship with donors and the public.'
Gregor McNie, Scotland Manager at the Institute of Fundraising, adds:
'We’re delighted with the support of the charities which joined the working group on cross-border fundraising and that many vital issues have been discussed and debated in the open and honest manner that characterises the fundraising sector.
'In many ways, communicating fundraising messages across the UK nations has become easier, but the environment in which we do this has never been so complex with different governments, regulators, sister organisations and donor groups to now consider.'
