This week we held a reception in the House of Commons to showcase the best of charity fundraising, as part of our ongoing work to strengthen the relationship between fundraisers and MPs in Parliament.

The packed event celebrated the achievements of the 2016 National Fundraising Award winners, giving MPs from all parties and parts of the country the chance to meet with the award winners and fundraisers from across the sector.

The event was hosted by the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Charities, Susan Elan Jones MP, who was also a member of the IoF and charity fundraiser herself before entering the House of Commons. We were delighted to have the Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson MP, address the event, as well as the Labour Shadow Minister, Steve Reed MP.

In his speech, Rob Wilson MP, the Minister for Civil Society, said that he is struck by the passion shown by individuals raising money for their cause. He welcomed the examples of excellent fundraising shown by the award winners representing some of the best fundraising in the charity sector. He went on to welcome the IoF’s new strategic framework and stated that good fundraising is vital for the future of charities.

Steve Reed MP, the Shadow Minister for Civil Society, said that the work of fundraisers has never been as important as it is now because of the pressures facing the charity sector. He highlighted his own experience of charity fundraising and working with the charitable sector in local government, and welcomed the great work of all of the National Fundraising Award winners.

Introducing the event, Susan Elan Jones MP, said that the contribution that fundraisers make to society is phenomenal. She spoke about her own experience before entering Parliament as a charity fundraiser in Wales, and the training and qualifications that she had received from the IoF as part of her own professional development.
