Major Donor Fundraising panel Q&A NOTE: September First Thursday will be preceded by the regional AGM

Building and maintaining a successful major donor programme can be hard – the bespoke and personalised nature of major donor fundraising can extend beyond the donor and to the programme itself; there isn't really a one-size fits all out there and it can be hard to compare your progress to your peers.

Chaired by a fundraiser who started a major gift programme from scratch for an international children’s charity, we have invited five major donor fundraisers with a range of experience to discuss below themes and to answer your questions in a panel-style Q&A. 

  • How to build a successful major donor programme on a shoe string
  • What is changing in philanthropy and how we are missing the bigger picture in diaspora giving?
  • Does size of an organisation really matter when it comes to building stronger relationships with major donors?
  • Utilising special events to cultivate and steward major donors
  • What are the major giving trends in the arts & cultural sector?


These experienced professionals will answer your questions on the topic of major donors so come along, ask away and go away with new knowledge and insights!

The panel includes:

Ikhlaq Hussain is your Chair for the evening. Ikhlaq is currently Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships at Orphans In Need. He is the newly elected Fellow of IoF and was included in Fundraising Magazine's Top "25 under 35" fundraisers list for 2018. Ikhlaq also teaches at IoF (SE&L) and he is trustee at Mind in Harrow. Ikhlaq is a columnist for various sector led media outlets including Third Sector and UK Fundraising.

Lily-Elizabeth Davies is Head of Philanthropy, Trusts & Special Events at Barnardo's, and was previously part of the Executive Team at Chickenshed, leading on Fundraising, Marketing, Communications and Social Enterprise Development. Lily helped to establish the first Innovation team at Marie Curie and has previously held senior-level positions within top commercial brands.

Anna-Maria Mullen PhD, MInstF(Dip) currently heads up Major Gifts at The Langdon Foundation. Since joining Langdon, Anna-Maria has transformed the patronage. She sits on the Major Donor Specialist Interest Group committee. She has extensive experience of major gifts fundraising from small and medium charities.

Dana Segal is a Fundraising & Management Consultant. She is currently a Senior Partner Consultant at The Management Centre, Director of Adapt for Arts, Deputy Director of the National Arts Fundraising School and Chair of Emergency Exit Arts. She is a committee member of the IoF's Cultural Sector Network. 

Keith Kibirango is the Senior Philanthropy Advisor at Save the Children, lead of the African Philanthropy Initiative and End-to-Malnutrition Campaign. Keith is currently focusing on raising support from African philanthropists, those in the diaspora or invested in the continent; and has so far raised over £5 million since launching the programme at Save the Children in 2019.

Where possible, we book reserve speakers for each First Thursday. These speakers will be able to give the 20 Minute Masterclass on a similar topic if our speaker is no longer able to attend. If, due to unforeseen circumstances, the speaker at an First Thursday event is unable to attend, we will notify you, and give you the details of the reserve speaker.  We will email you via the address provided on the booking form as soon as possible.  All those who have booked for the particular First Thursday will be able to cancel their place up to 5.00pm on the day of the event.  If we are unable to confirm an alternative speaker for an First Thursday event, we will still go ahead and will facilitate a group discussion in place of the 20 Minute Masterclass, followed by a networking session.
