Public Fundraising Certification Programme
The Institute of Fundraising (IoF) provides a range of compliance services to its members. Our aim is to ensure that membership of the IoF is nationally recognised as a commitment to sustainable, honest and respectful fundraising. To support this aim, the IoF has developed the UK’s first Public Fundraising Certification Programme.
Public Fundraising includes street, door-to-door, private site and telephone fundraising for the purpose of securing long-term donors supporting charities via direct-debit giving. Our Certification Programme currently covers both charities with ‘in-house’ teams and fundraising agencies conducting public fundraising.
The Certification Programme consists of three, connected elements:
- First, a detailed member self-assessment is completed, which covers all relevant aspects of their fundraising policies and operations, such as recruiting, training and monitoring fundraisers.
- Second, members agree to an ‘open-door’ policy on their training, meaning that IoF staff are able to attend all training sessions and provide feedback in a structured, recorded way.
- Third, members commit to participate in the IoF’s fundraiser monitoring work, which where applicable, provides mystery shopping and oversight of teams across the UK (the IoF currently provides mystery shopping coverage for street and private site fundraising only).
Following this rigorous process, the IoF Compliance Directorate updates and publishes the Certification Status of its members, which can be found below, as and when new applications are received.
Members who have satisfactorily completed all three elements are given ‘Certified’ status; members who have made substantive progress in completing all three elements, but have yet to receive a training observation from the IoF, or who are in the process of updating their policies, are given ‘Provisional Certification’; and those members who have not completed all three elements but have applied and are going through the process are recorded as ‘currently applying for certification’.
