Coronavirus: Impact on Welsh charity sector

New survey finds that almost three quarters of respondents will need to make cuts to their charity services.

The survey, by IoF Cymru, includes data from 91 fundraisers on the impact of the crisis on their organisations. The findings were shared with the Welsh Government by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s chief executive, Peter Lewis, in a letter today as he made the case for appropriate and equitable funding for Welsh charities.

Key findings summary:

  • Seven in 10 respondents (70%) say that they expect their charity will have to make cuts to the services they deliver.
  • 86% of respondents either have low confidence or no confidence at all that they will be able to achieve their individual financial targets during this financial year.
  • An overwhelming 96% of respondents say the government has not done enough to support charities which are losing fundraising income.
  • Available government scheme are making a difference but there are gaps in funding: 59% of respondents say the proposed government support will help their charity, whilst 41% say that none of the proposed government schemes will help their charity.

The survey was conducted between 3rd April and 14th April. The results are based on results from 91 fundraisers across the sector in Wales. The survey was run by the Institute of Fundraising’s Cymru Committee. 

Peter Lewis, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, said

Fundraisers across Wales are facing an incredibly challenging time to keep their organisations running, managing the increased demand in services, and raising the funds desperately needed to make it possible.

Additional funding and support is needed to support services which respond directly to helping people through the coronavirus crisis, and another to replace lost fundraised income in order to sustain existing charity services.
