IoF celebrates legacies during Remember a Charity Week
7 September 2015
The Institute of Fundraising is celebrating the role and impact of legacy givers during Remember A Charity in your Will Week (7th-13th September 2015), showcasing the Extreme Will-Writing campaign documentary. Charitable bequests are the largest single source of voluntary income in the UK, generating more than £2.2 billion in 2014.
Remember A Charity’s public awareness campaign launches today, 7th September 2015, with a new documentary and a series of interviews with legacy donors; extreme Will-writers in their sixties and above, who sign their Will at 10,000 feet, before skydiving down to land. The campaign slogan is “you don’t have to go to extremes to become a Living Legend, you can just leave a gift to charity in your Will”.
Celebrating the impact of legacy giving, charities are being encouraged to tweet about their ‘legendary’ legacy givers during the week at #LivingLegend.
Peter Lewis, Chief Executive of the Institute of Fundraising, said: "Remember A Charity’s light-hearted, celebratory approach to what can be a very serious topic is a great way to celebrate the impact of legacy giving and get legacy conversations started. The consortium is a fantastic example of how collaboration within the sector can enable powerful social change.”
Rob Cope, director of Remember A Charity, said: " “Our research shows that 35% of the UK are happy to leave a gift in their Will, but only 7% currently do. Remember A Charity Week helps to address the disconnect between intention and action. By working together, charities have a critical opportunity to change behaviour and make legacy giving a social norm.
“Particularly in light of the negative portrayal of fundraising in the media recently, it has never been more important that charities continue to strive for the highest standards, cherish their supporters and celebrate success. Without legacy giving, many charitable services may not survive.
“During Remember A Charity Week, we are encouraging charities to come together and celebrate the legendary impact of their legacy givers.”
Remember A Charity is the IoF’s long-standing legacy campaign; a consortium of over 150 charities that works to make legacy giving a social norm. The campaign is backed by Government, as well as almost 1,000 solicitors and Will-writing firms across the UK. The campaign aims to make legacy giving a social norm.
